Becky's Crash Hot Potatoes- A Tribute

I am participating in a tribute to Becky Turner that is on Facebook today in honour of her birthday. This is my second post in honour of Becky. Her passing has been heavy on many hearts. Happy Birthday Becky. Thank you for that you have shared with us.
Becky was the first follower of my blog.  I was so thrilled. From her blog I found the rest of the dish divas (other Fiesta collectors) as well as other blogs. I started following Becky because of the dishes. As I went to read previous posts, I read about her illness.  I was amazed by her positve attitude and it reminded me of my husband who battled also has a great attitude when he was battling Testicular cancer. I then looked forward to her recipe postings. She shared everything from her illness, her family history, her photos, her recipes, and her collections among other things. She was always positive and didn't let her illness hold her back.  She was such as inspiration and will continue to be for many

So in honour of Becky, I made one of the recipes she shared and another table. I had been wanting to try several of the recipes that Becky shared on her blog. I will admit that I regret not trying it sooner so that I could have discussed with Becky how my version came out. Even if I had I would have been hesitant to bother her since she had so much going on. But I know she would be glad I made the effort.  I am looking forward to viewing all the tributes to Becky as she touched so many lives.

It is a simple recipe but then again I think Becky made it all look easy. She was great in sharing pictures while she was cooking.  She always told where the recipe came from or the inspiration.  Although this was not a family recipe, she seemed really excited about this one. The first recipe that caught my eye were her coined potatoes. I hope to try that next.

I will admit that I didn't boil the potatoes long enough the first time. So I put them back and boiled them a little longer.

The recipe called for 16 but I only made 10 since it was just two of us dining together.  I still have some left over for lunch tomorrow.

 So my potatoes do not look as pretty as the way Becky had prepared them. I added the salt, pepper and Thyme.

 I set the table while they were baking. We had some baked chicken and salad to go along with the potatoes. I used Fiesta in Scarlet, Rose, Periwinkle, Gray and Plum.  The linens were the inspiration for the table.  On my first table for Becky, I used two the Fiesta blues. Sorry I haven't learned how to put the link in.

 I added some sharp cheddar cheese to my serving. The hubby added the cheese and sour cream.  Although, they didn't look as good as Becky's, they were tasty and I do plan to make them again along with some of her other potato recipes.

There is no way I can come close to the way Becky presented her recipes. I just love the way she used to show the finished dish on one of her fabulous dishes. She showed this one on a Revol yellow chicken baker.

Lots of thrifty finds

I had very good luck this weekend with my thrifty finds. I had been having somewhat of dry spell.
Here is the picture of all the goodies.

I saw the witch as soon as we walked into Savers. She was $3.99.

The green Tiara glass is for my friend Sam's sister. They were $0.99 each.

The small Fiesta platter was $.199 and the medium platter was $2.99. The color is Cinnabar.

The tray and coasters along with the linens were found at a local thrift store.  The tray was $2.99. It is aluminum and has lots of details.  The coasters were found several weeks ago. I just got around to cleaning them and polishing them. There are eight of them and a divided bowl.  They came home with me for $2.99.

I think the Fiesta runner was a tablecloth that was cut into a runner. The poinsietta napkins are Vera and match a tablecoth that is also Vera that my aunt gave me. The poinsietta runner will work on one my tables for Christmas.  Now my gem is the rose tablecloth. It goes very well with my Franciscian plates. I was so excited about the napkins and the tablecloth that I had to call my aunt. She is the only one here who would be just as excited as I am.

Fiesta and Franciscan

My aunt collects Franciscan Desert Rose. I have always admired it. Since I have been finding some pieces at thrift stores and estate sales, I guess you could say I am starting my own collection. I like the way it looks with Fiesta in Rose (not vintage) and Ivory(not vintage). Both salt and pepper shakers and the gravy boat were made in the USA before the company was sold. The salad plates are made in England.

The glasses were found at an estate sale a few years ago. The napkins and place mats are clearance purchases from Dillard's. The rings are licensed Fiesta and were found on eBay.

I hope the pictures are better and that I can still link of with Susan at Between Naps on the Porch.

Random Thoughts

Do you ever wonder what is going to happen to your stuff? Will someone love/like it as much as you do? Most of you have children and grandchildren that might be remotely interested in it. I do not. I have a God daughter but will she want my stuff? She will be inheriting all of her Grandmother's stuff. If my husband out lives me, will he keep it, give it away or have an estate sale? I hope there will be an estate sale so that people like me that look for treasures will find something from my stuff.

Today, I went to visit my aunt who fuels my addiction to dishes. I learned that she has two more sets of dishes. She says she wished used them more often.  With the fast paced life her daughters and grandkids lead, it is difficult, as my aunt needs assistance getting the dishes down.  She knows I use all my stuff since she witnessed it for my mother's 80th birthday celebration. She thought I was nuts.  Anyway, she was asking some of these questions. I asked her if her daughters were interested in her dishes and she said yes but... Her daughters also like dishes and decorate for special occassions. So most of her stuff will go to them. My aunt had some doubt in her voice though and that made me think about me. I asked her if I could come back to her house to "play" dishes. I don't think she thought I was serious. She has gotten me hooked on Fransican Desert Rose. She has every piece created I think. I would love to tablescape with it.
If I continue on the path that I am on, I will be the old lady who had too many dishes. Will these thoughts make me want to trim down? I doubt it. I love having a beautiful table even if we are eating sandwiches. Yes, there are days that I get tired of washing dishes and even (dare I say) use a paper plate. My husband helps a lot and I know he gets tired doing the dishes but even so, he asks me what I am going to do next.

My thoughts are all over the place.

Watermelon Take Two

I had redress the table with watermelons when I received some new goodies and found the napkins.

The tray and bowls were gifts from my BFF. I hope to tablescape from her house someday using her Coca-Cola dishes.  She has several and we will surely have some fun. Anyway, she is one of many that fuel my addiction to tablescaping, not only with her gifts, but with her ideas.

I found the napkins a few weeks ago at my favorite thrift store. For $2.99 I could not pass them up.

I hope my pictures are better. I have a new camera  but I think I think the lighting in the dining room might still be a problem.

Hen and Roosters

I never thought I would get into so many themes for my tables.

The tablecloth came first. I found it at a thrift store. I liked the colors.  I first used it last year with some other dishes but this time I am using the new Fiesta color Marigold.  The Hen was next. I found her at the Goodwill. She is damaged but I couldn't leave her behind. I found the napkin rings last week at Savers. So I had the table started in my head but then I saw that Shelia at Note Songs was having a party and I had to join in on the fun. Please visit to her blog to see everyone else's Roos and Chicks.

Can you say Ice cream tablescape?

The day started at an estate sale. Everything was extremely overpriced so I headed to my favorite thrift store.  They have a huge variety of dishes and napkins which is what I go for.  I found the three sugar cone bowls for $3.99. I saw a similar waffle cone cup at Pier 1 for $.699. I found 7 of them for $9.99.  I was thrilled.  The idea for the ice cream tablescape comes from the The Tablescaper's (http://www.thetablescaper.blogspot.com)  Ice Cream social that she created for her kids.  I want to do something similar for my nieces.

A Table for Becky

One of my blogging buddies crossed over this past week. Becky Turner's blog is Random Musings of a Deco Lady. She fought a difficult battle with MDS (myelodysplacia) all the time with a positve attitude. She shared her battle, family events, recipes and tablescapes.  She always took the time to explain the history of the theme of the tablescape or recipe.

She is one of two people that I know of that have battled MDS.  My BFF's husband crossed over in March of this year.  I guess that is why I am taking Ms. Becky's passing with a very heavy heart.

She was my first follower on my blog. She encouraged me to continue and to join a message board of HLC collectors. Her favorite dishes were Harlequin in blue. My dishes are Fiesta by the same maker. This is my tribute to Ms. Becky.

Art Deco was a favorite of Becky's. This hostess bowl has that art deco feel.
